N1.162bn Fraud: Tears as ex-Plateau Governor, Senator Dariye, is sentenced to 14 yrs imprisonment

Former Plateau state governor, Joshua Chibi Dariye has been found guilty of money laundering and sentenced to 14 years imprisonment without an option of fine

The convict, Dariye attacked the prosecution counsel Rotimi Jacobs SAN after the learned silk said the conduct of the convict (Dariye) does not show remorse.

Dariye told Mr Jacobs that he (Jacobs) is not God and therefore cannot judge his feelings.

Rotimi Jacobs urged the judge to impose a severe sentence which will deter others from similar conduct.

The Judgment which lasted about eight hours was delivered by justice Adebukola Banjoko on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at a Federal Capital Territory high court in Gudu, Abuja.

Dariye who is currently a serving Senator representing Plateau central was found guilty of counts one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, 11, 17, 21, 22 and 23. While he was discharged of counts 12,13,14,16,18 and 20.
All counts bothered on criminal breach of trust and criminal misappropriation.

Dariye was governor between 1999 and 2007 and arraigned on July 13, 2007, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC], for allegedly diverting the Plateau state ecological funds worth N1.162bn for personal use.

The Senator has since 2004 been declared wanted in the United Kingdom after he jumped bail.

The drama is far from over for the Dariye family as one of the son’s of the former governor Nanle Miracle Dariye is also standing trial for alleged money laundering at the Federal high court in Abuja.
