19-year-old wins N.5 million as UN, Nigeria fete Osotimehin

United Nations and Nigeria have launched an annual memorial lecture for late Babatunde Osotimehin.

Osotimehin was until his death on 4th June 2017 the Executive Director, United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA.

He led the foremost organization between January 1, 2011, advancing wellbeing of children, women and others, after previously serving as pioneer Director-General, National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, and Nigeria’s Minister of Health.

The lecture, which debuted on Monday July 2 in Abuja, brought together creme de la creme of the UN system in Nigeria and those of the nation’s health sector.

A lecture delivered by Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, and titled “Implication of the population of 190 million and Economic Development and Health/Wellbeing of Future Generations of Nigerians,” examined Nigeria’s population, its implications for the present and future of the nation.

The lecture also examined the state of health of children and women, efforts of government to halt high rate of maternal and child deaths in the country and creating prosperity for national development.

At the event, winners of essay competition in honour of the deceased were rewarded with cash, as overall winner went home with N500,000 and first and second runners-up got N300,000 and N200,000 respectively.
