2018 Census: NPC awaits Buhari’s directive

The Chairman of National Population Commission (NPC), Eze Duruiheoma said the 2018 census will hold as soon as President Buhari issues am proclamation for the conduct of national population and housing census.

He said this in Abuja on Thursday, February 16, 2016 during a Press
Conference at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja.

Duruiheoma said: “If Mr.President graciously issues a proclamation that we
need to tap into the service wide votes in order to support the census
project.”

He also said there is no need to be anxious about if the 2018 census will
be conducted because the Commission did not get enough provision in
Nigeria’s 2017 budget.

He said as soon as the President issues the proclamation, international
donors will help to fund the census.

“Some people have expressed worry that there is no adequate provision made
for census in the budget of 2017 and then that calls for despair. I don’t
think that is correct.”, Duruiheoma said

“The most important thing now is that proclamation. If we get that
proclamation, the need to spend will now arise and when the need to spend
arises.”, he added

“International donor agencies will be of immense important and immense
help in this regard and government will also play its very wonderful
role.”, he concluded

In Nigeria, Census is meant to hold every ten years as stipulated by the
Census Act. The last time Census was carried out in Nigeria was in 2006
which automatically made the next census 2016.

But NPC postponed the exercise to 2017 due to paucity of fund and further
shifted it to 2018 for the same reason.
