2019 polls sequence: Amendment is self serving – Senator Ali Wakili
The Senate on Wednesday adopted the conference committee report on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, which recommended that the presidential election will be the last to be conducted in 2019.
Efforts made by senators loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the adoption of the Conference Report of Senate on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2015 were resisted by Senate President Bukola Saraki who ruled them out of order.
In protest, the pro-Buhari senators, who felt that the reordering of the sequence of 2019 elections was targeted at the President, walked out of the Red Chamber.
It’s self serving – Wakili
Also speaking, Senator Malam Ali Wakili (APC, Bauchi) said the amendment was self serving.
“Why did they wait until after the INEC has come out with the timetable? If we look at the cost-benefit to the economy, four elections in one month! It is not well for the economy, politics and security.
“We had, inside this chamber, considered conference reports and we dissolved into house, looked at them clause by clause, raised observations and returned them back to the House of Reps. Why must it be different in this case?” he said.
