5.2bn Scam: Court sentences five senior officials of Rural Electrification Agency to prison
Justice Adebukola Banjoko of the FCT, High Court sitting in Gudu, Abuja today sentenced Samuel Ibi Gekpe and four other senior officials of Rural Electrification Agency, REA, to prison.
Gekpe who is former managing director, REA and the other accused persons- Abdullahi Aliyu, former permanent secretary of the ministry of power; Simon Kirdi Nanle, an Accountant in REA; Engr. Kayode Orekoya, Director of Projects; Abdusamad Garba Hahun, Assistant Director and Kayode Oyedeji, Head of Legal Department.were accused of breaching the trust conferred on them as public officers by fraudulently awarding contracts for Grid Extension and Solar Electricity from the amended budget 2008 of the REA.
The presiding judge said the matter is a clear manifestation of dishonesty as the contract awards were well crafted to boycott laid down process.
However, the judge said that the federal government did not incur any loss and prosecution were
unable to prove that the defendants diverted funds for their personal gain.
The defendants were found guilty of all 65 count charge.
Justice Banjoko sentenced the 3rd to 6th defendant to one-year
imprisonment with an option of N500,000 fine. The 1st Defendant was
sentenced to three years imprisonment but with an option of N5m fine payable within one month
