Corruption Trial: Senate President Bukola Saraki’s CCT trial to proceed day-to-day

The Chairman of Code of Conduct Tribunal Abuja, Danladi Umar has directed
that the trial of the senate president, Bukola Saraki  henceforth will be
day-to-day.

The trial shall commence between 10am in the morning and end 6pm daily
until the matter is concluded.

Justice Umar Danladi upheld that his decision to conduct a daily trial was
in line with the provisions of sec 396(6) of the Administration of
Criminal Justice Act.

Rotimi Jacobs had requested the tribunal for a one hour stand down through
his lawyer to enable him appear before the court of appeal.

During the trial, Mr. Esegina told the tribunal that the prosecuting lead
counsel, Rotimi Jacobs had asked him to stand in pending his arrival from
the court of Appeal.

‘’The tribunal will not wait for any counsel whether or not he should be
at the trial. I’m saying this to both the prosecution and the defense
counsels’’ the Judge said

According to section 396(6) every criminal trial of a defendant after
arraignment must be from day to day.

Justice Umar agreed to their plea and stood down the matter till 12pm,
though initially he opposed the request but later acceded after plea from
both counsels.

‘’For as many who want to pray we will give a break of about 15 minutes
and by 4pm we will give another extra 15 minutes break for people who wish
to stretch their legs’’ he said.

Trial resumes tomorrow April 19 for continuation of cross examination of
witness.
