Court reviews Sowore’s bail conditions

The Federal High Court on Monday in Abuja revied reviewed the bail conditions granted to the detained convener of #RevolutionNow protest and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, in his alleged treasonable felony charges.

The presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu in her verdict waived the earlier stipulations that said Sowore should deposit N50m as a security deposit. She also reduced the amount attached to co-defendant Olawale Bakare’s bail to N20 million. The court had on October 4 this year granted them bail on conditions, which Sowore’s counsel considered impossible to meet. The activists through their lawyer, Femi Falana, asked the court to vary the bail conditions and pleaded for leniency. Some of the reasons Falana gave the judge is that Sowore needed to visit his family and he is a teacher in the United States of America.

The presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu refused to vary all other bail conditions. The prosecution counsel led by Hassan Liman, objected to the application for a variation on the ground that the offense brought against the defendant bordered on national security. Sowore and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare have been unable to meet bail conditions granted to them on October 4 and have since then remained in the custody of the Department of State Services. The court also adjourned the case until November 6 and 7 for further hearing.
