Era of immunity and impunity is over for public officers in Nigeria- Fayemi
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Kayode Fayemi said citizens should hold their leaders accountable so that the leaders won’t see themselves as overlords.
He made the statement at The West African Civil Society Forum (WASCOF) which held in Abuja on Monday. Fayemi said it is imperative for citizens to know their rights and ensure that the leaders that they’ve elected also take those rights seriously.
The Minister said: “The experts will tell you that democracy is a means and not a need and we also never let the perfect become the enemy of the good just cast your mind to where we used to be to indicate a goal in West Africa.” “Some are even unable to move freely within their country and we really must try as much as possible to move from an over-instrumentalization of this democratization process.” “Because we have freedom now we take it for granted and now we move to the next phase that okay now that we got our independence now what are we going to do with it?”
The Minister also said that the public should hold the Government accountable to those things that they’ve promised. “The challenge is to ensure that the democracy we have served to our people it is not doing that well right now so question of capacity, the capability of our state and the commitment of the leadership and the activism of the ordinary people too to ensure that the leaders don’t see themselves as overlords but as just firsts among equals is what we must try and achieve.”
