Police Protest: Lawmaker bemoans leadership failure

Two months after the Divisional Police Officer of the National Assembly was transferred from Federal Capital Territory Police Command to Adamawa command, a member of the House of Representatives has called on the House to be careful when dealing with issues that relate to police.

Representative Chukwuma Onyema Made the call while contributing to a motion on the urgent need to investigate the protest embarked upon by policemen in Borno State.

Recall call that the police had in May transferred the DPO in charge of National Assembly to Adamawa barely a month after thugs invaded the Senate a catered away with the mace.

Both the Senate and the House had constituted a joint committee to investigate the incidence that leads to the eventual security breach.

Representative Danburam Nuhu cautioned the police against dismissing and or penalizing protesting officers but to look into remote causes.

“I hope we are not going to wake to the news that a decision has been taken by the [police to discipline the policemen that embarked on peaceful protest without looking into the remote cause of the protest”.

Danduram said the welfare of police officers especially those on the frontline of combating insurgency should be paramount.

“We should not allow our policemen, especially those that have been sent out to go and make sacrifices to ensure the security of our nation and to be at the forefront of fighting insecurity in our country”
