Senate leadership: 48 PDP senators won’t rule over our 53 APC senators – Oshiomhole

Chairman of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole, has insisted Senate President, Bukola Saraki, must relinquish his position, following his recent defection from the APC to the main opposition party, Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP)

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday August 10, Oshiomhole offered reasons Saraki, who has faced covert and overt opposition from the APC leadership since he emerged President of the Senate in June 2015 against the wish of the party, must step down.

Saraki defected to the PDP on Tuesday July 31, 2018, after weeks of speculations by the public that his body language was pushing towards defection from the ruling party.

Apart from helping Ike Ekweremadu, a chieftain of the PDP and elected senator, to emerge Deputy Senate President, Saraki’s supposed sins against the APC include his obvious support for the defection of 15 senators from the ruling party on July 25, 2018.

Saraki seems to have overwhelmingly outsmarted and humbled the party in virtually all matters that have surfaced and worsened their relationships.

The Senate President had faced three-year legal battle with the presidency over alleged false assets declaration, with the litigations dragging from the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to the Supreme Court. He defeated the APC up to the Supreme Court.

In his Friday’s address, Oshiomhole said in part: ”Senator Saraki did not only complain that he wasn’t given juicy appointments, but that Right Honourable (Yakubu) Dogara was also not given. And, I wonder aloud whether Saraki thought that Dogara is not capable of speaking for himself. Afterall, he is the Speaker.

“So, if those were the views of Right Honourable Dogara, it is not for Senator Saraki to parrot. This is because Hon. Dogara is capable of speaking for himself. The point I only try to make is that Saraki wants to drag everybody along with him.

“The All Progressives Congress as a party, and myself as the chairman, we have confidence in Hon. Dogara. I’ve had very useful interactions with him. We’ve had couples of meeting. He has shared with me in trust, his concerns that have to do with issues with Bauchi state. I have taken steps to address those issues with the best of my ability.

“I have shared with him that I’m excited that we are getting very positive results. So, Hon. Dogara has no problem with the All Progressives Congress. And, he didn’t do anything similar to what Saraki did.

“He emerged as Speaker, and he also ensured as a patriot that an APC member emerged as Deputy Speaker. He wasn’t so desperate to mortgage that position to the PDP; in order to cling on as the Speaker. He knew the difference between personal interest and his party interest.”
