Merit Award 2016: Recipients urge Buhari to increase research funding
The recipient of the Nigerian National Merit Award, Prof. Sadik Omowunmi urged the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari to direct more funds into research in energy development and science to bring about more innovations.
She said this during the Forum of Laureates of the Nigerian National Merit Award in Abuja on Tuesday.
Sadik also said she and some of her scientist colleagues have extensive collaborations with institutions in Nigeria and other parts in Africa and they will continue to make improvements.
The Second recipient of the award whose specialties is in Humanities, Prof. Tanure Ojaide said Nigerians should not only focus on science because humanities teaches discipline and sensitivity to people needs which is why the country needs to adopt the values of humanities to pursue scientific goals to make the country progress.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal said he is happy that two people have been singled out to receive an award of this magnitude and that people should not focus on the number of the people but the input.
Babachir also said the committee had worked hard to source for the recipients of the award and that Nigerians should aspire to work hard to provide home grown solutions to problems.
