Aisha Yesufu, a Co-Convener of Bring Back Our Girls group, has said through her Twitter handle, that the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and other passengers escaped being kidnapped by hoodlums at Rigasa Train Station on Sunday evening.
Yesufu also said that her brother, sister and sister in-law were involved in the narrow escape.
An online news platform, Daily Nigerian, had reported that kidnappers laid in ambush around Mando area and attempted to waylay the passengers including Amaechi, who arrived at Rigasa train station around 8:15 pm on Sunday.
The newspaper quoted sources as saying that no sooner had the kidnappers opened fire on the vehicles than policemen and soldiers arrived at the scene in armoured vehicles to disperse the hoodlums.
Amaechi in a tweet, described the report as fake and urged Nigerians to ignore it.
The minister also debunked the story in an interview with Channels Television, expressing his surprise at the story. He explained that he was shocked when he got several calls from his wife who was apparently troubled after seeing the story on social media and had called to confirm his safety. The minister noted that he had just left a party 12am midnight when he received his wife’s call.
He concluded that the earlier social media is regulated, the better.
