The Nigerian army on Friday buried 19 of the soldiers who lost their lives in an attack by Boko Haram insurgents at Metele, Guzamala local government area of Borno state.
While there were reports that over 100 soldiers were killed, the army pegged the casualty figure 23. The tragic incident took place on November 18.
The soldiers were laid to rest at the military cemetery, Maimalari cantonment, Maiduguri.
The ceremony, which was attended by senior military officers, government officials, representatives of the Shehu of Borno and family members of the deceased, was officiated by Muslim and Christian clerics.
Tukur Buratai, chief of army staff, described the incident as tragic, noting that the soldiers sacrificed their lives in defence of the nation’s territorial integrity.Read More
