Breaking: Journalists who misrepresent court will remain in prison until I retire, CCT chairman threatens
Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar who is presiding over the criminal case if suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen has threatened to arrest and imprison any journalist that misrepresent the court.
He said this on Thursday at the resumed trial, shortly after counsel to the prosecution and defendant announced their appearance.
“Are there journalists in court?” Umar asked.
According to him, several journalists had misinterpreted proceedings that happened at the tribunal on the last adjourned date. He said Onnoghen’s counsel, Adegboyga Awomolo made a remark that the asset declaration forms of Onnoghen which the prosecution sought to tender as an exhibit, appeared to be “loose”. But newspaper publications had reported that Onnoghen alleged that those forms “mutilated.”
Infuriated, Mr Umar went on to say those publications are “considered mysterious, distorted facts and misrepresentation of what happened in court on that day”.
“You are lucky today. I would have used the full wrath of the tribunal to summon you and put you in prison.
“I would bring heaven down on them, then I would ensure that they stay there until I retire from office which is 28years from now but I changed my mind.”
