Nigerian Senate to upgrade two colleges of education to universities
The senate, on Wednesday reignited the move to upgrade two colleges of education into universities following the second reading of the upgrading bill by Senator Jibrin Barau (Kano North Senatorial District).
Two colleges of education, Federal College of Education (FCE), Kano and Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, are on the verge of being upgraded to universities.
The bill for the conversion of these colleges was proposed by Senators Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano) and Samuel Anyanwu (PDP, Imo), in late 2016.
The bills, which were named “Federal University of Education Kano (Establishment, etc) Bill, 2016 and Alvan Ikoku University of Education Owerri (Establishment, etc) Bill, 2016”, passed through the first reading at the senate on Thursday, December 1, 2016.
This is not an unprecedented development in the country.
Under the President Goodluck Jonathan led administration, institutions such as the Federal College of Education, Zaria and Adeyemi Federal College of Education, Ondo, were converted to universities.
