Oshiomhole to Reps on 2019: APC’s victory not about who controls the party

Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Adams Oshiomhole has told members of his party in the House of Representatives that the victory of the party in 2019 polls is not about who is in charge of its structures, but about personalities making up the party across the nation.

The party leader stated this when he met with the lawmakers, including Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara in Abuja on Thursday July 5.

The party has been in crises, resulting in a splinter group emerging on Wednesday July 4.

Reformed-APC, as the new group is known, has aggrieved members who believe they have been neglected and maltreated by the ruling party.

It is expected that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who has been on trial since its inception of the president Muhammadu Buhari-led government and Speaker of the House of Representatives will be joining the break-away faction.

Oshiomhole told the lawmakers while appealing to them to support the party: “We are approaching 2019 elections, and there are couples of things that are expected to happen including nomination etc. I can understand how people feel, if they feel that the last congresses had been organized in such a way that they think they have lost the basis upon which they can possibly seek re-election. I am here to assure you that those who spend, in my view, all the time on control of structure, they are poor students of history.

“This is because each structure is all that we need to control in an environment that we have as much as 60 political parties. You can actually become the chairman, the secretary and welfare director of the ward. The man, the chairman, the wife, the secretary, the son, the legal adviser, the daughter, the woman leader and so on and so forth. And, you control everything down the line.

“You put your nieces and nephews in the structure, and you can guarantee yourself a presidential ticket. And, it will be even much more easier if what you seek is to be a member of the House of Reps. But, a seasoned politician in a democratic environment that we are in, committed to free and fair election, and Mr Speaker, I am proud of the fact that I come from the part of the country where rigging was a way of life and party structure control was the name of the game.”
