Following the non-accommodation of the South-east geopolitical zone in the leadership structure of the House of Representatives, the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has given the assurance that the zone will be adequately compensated.
The South-east did not get any position following the insistence by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the House Leader must emerge from the South-west, even though the same zone already has the position of Deputy Speaker.
Dogara, while speaking at the inaugural meeting of the APC House Caucus late Wednesday night into the early hours of yesterday, said all the crises in the lower chamber had been resolved and the House was now ready for legislative business.
“There are no more factions in the House as what we have today is a group of lawmakers loyal to the House leadership and our great party.”
“It is only in unity that we can positively contribute to the change we all worked for and move Nigeria forward towards our desired dream of a greater nation,” Dogara added.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, echoed the Speaker’s position.
“There are no longer factions in the House, whatever happened earlier is now behind us and we are ready to serve Nigerians to the best of our ability,” he said.
Commenting on the marginalisation of the South-east in the leadership structure, Gbajabiamila also disclosed that the zone would be compensated.
“It is not right to play the ethnicity or regional card for now but they will be adequately compensated,” he said.
